Diatom Instruments was started by James Edwards in 2025. He is a musician, programmer, and engineer with a deep passion for music and technology.
Diatom Instruments strive to be immediate, tactile, accessible, and unique. Each instrument has a distinct character emerging from the constraints that define its limitations and possibilities. They are not neutral or sterile: they have color and personality. An instrument extends the body with music making capabilities, and as such they should be intuitive and natural to play. Configuration or setup, if required, should be a separate workflow from musical creation and never interrupt it.
